Nampula city is the capital of Nampula province and is situated about 170km inland. It was established as a Portuguese military base in 1967, and now serves as an important trade link between Malawi and the sea. There are obvious indications of wealth in the city compared to other further south.

Access is by tarred road from Quelimane or on LAM schedule flights from other provincial capitals.
